Hope Overflowing – In the Face of Covid-19

 “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit”.[Romans 15:13: NLT]

It is said that hope is the only thing common to all men. But sometimes we come to a place in our lives where we seem to be losing hope. Hope that things would get better; hope that tomorrow would be better than today. Similarly, the Covid-19 pandemic has cast a shadow of uncertainty over the nations of the world. Many wonder when the pandemic would be halted in their nation and in the world at large so life can return to normal. As we observe the guidelines for hygiene given by the World Health Organisation, we must remind ourselves of certain truths.

 In our moments of hopelessness we need to draw ever closer to God in prayer, for He is the source of hope as the Scripture above tells us.

We need to ask him to fill us completely with joy and peace. We can be filled with joy and peace as we remind ourselves that God is in control of the events of our lives and the unfolding events of the world  (Romans 8:28; Psalm 46). As we put our trust in him through prayer, we would find ourselves overflowing with confident hope, not by our own power but by the power of the Holy Spirit. We would then be able to say like Paul that “Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us” Romans 8: 37.

Be gone, unbelief;
my Savior is near,
and for my relief
will surely appear;
by prayer let me wrestle,
and he will perform;
with Christ in the vessel,
I smile at the storm.

(John Newton 1779)

    Romans 4:18. Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”20. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,21. being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

    My HOPE is built on nothing else
    Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness….
    Jesus the same yesterday, today and forever. He will never leave us nor forsake us; He is the answer to it all!!

    And hope does not disappoint us, Rom 5:5. These are words that has gotten me through some of the toughest times of my life, knowing that as long as I hold on to hope, hope in God’s promises, then I’ll never be disappointed

    Luke 18:1. And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;

    This is the opening verse to the parable of the persistent widow (Luke 18:1-8).
    lesson to us — PRAYER is the demonstration of our faith in God!

    Thank you Sue! We need to pray ever fervently in these times.
